This was a post that was recently on my Instagram feed.As an educator for 25 years I have seen this firsthand with my students. It is pretty easy to tell which students have spent some time reading over the summer as opposed to those who did not. Is this something you are concerned about? Don’t let it be. There are so many reliable and readily available resources right now to assist you with all of your child’s reading needs. Recently I did a post on Hooked on Phonics. This program is a multifaceted program with monthly subscription. It includes workbooks as well as an app to reinforce basic phonetic skills for your K through 2nd grade reader.
If you’re looking for some additional reading material to keep your child reading this summer, I highly recommend the I Can Read! books. I have used these in my classroom and with my own children for many years. The greatest thing about these books is they come in different levels. Level one is for your beginning reader with just a few words on the page and lots of pictures to support the text. It goes up to level four which is usually what I use for my second graders. Again, lots of supportive pictures but an increase in the quantity of text and topic depth.
Speaking of depth, that is what I also love about these books. They aren’t just about providing a controlled reading resource (although they do an amazing job with that for the early readers) but they try to increase their interest in reading by offering topics kids like to read about! This will increase comprehension because kids are reading and wanting to understand what they are reading. Ultimately, this will help create life-long readers.
Right now, there is an AMAZING deal going on for the I Can Read books. You can get your first two books in the I Can Read! Book Club ABSOLUTELY FREE! You pay just $1.00 for shipping and handling. If you wish to continue receiving shipments from the I Can Read! Book Club, do nothing. Starting in about two weeks, and every month thereafter you will receive five paperback books from the I Can Read! Book Club at just $3.99 each plus shipping and handling per shipment. BUT you can cancel at ANYTIME! There is never an obligation to purchase additional books!!!

June 11, 2020I was a product of the Summer reading program at our local library. I couldn’t take my daughter since I worked full time and this series would have helped so much. Thanks for sharing.

June 29, 2020This looks fab. I used to be a teacher and parents were always asking me for book recommendations. The choice can be overwhelming. This looks like a great place to start!
